Bill Clegg QC is widely acknowledged as one of the UK's leading appeals barristers.
He has appeared in over 200 cases in the Court of Appeal, Administrative Court
and Supreme Court.
Bill has acted in many miscarriage of justice cases, including those taken up by the BBC TV Rough Justice programme and those sent to the Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, including:
Convicted of killing the television presenter Jill Dando, Barry George’s conviction for murder was overturned after Bill called fresh evidence before the Court of Appeal.
Barry George was subsequently acquitted on his retrial where Bill also defended him.
Mark Dallagher was the first man in this country to be convicted on the basis of an ear print. The case was taken up by Rough Justice and Bill successfully appealed the conviction following the calling of fresh expert evidence. The prosecution eventually offered no evidence against him and he was acquitted before the retrial took place.
In cases where fraud has been alleged Bill has acted in the Court of Appeal in a string of cases including R v Ali, R v El Kurd, R v Ramzan and R v Sakavickas where the convictions were overturned following submissions made by Bill pointing out that the defendants had been wrongly charged.
Where courts have imposed excessive sentences following a plea of guilty,Bill’s reputation as a leading appeals barrister and QC sees him frequently acting in the Court of Appeal and succeeding in having those sentences reduced.
Bill is prepared to advise in any case where it is thought that either someone has been wrongly convicted or where an excessive sentence has been passed. In addition to criminal appeals, Bill also acts in the Administrative Court challenging decisions of the magistrates court and government agencies by way of judicial review.
